Before I became pregnant with my first child, I thought I was totally prepared for motherhood. As a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, I spent years studying family systems and child development. I saw numerous families in various stages of life and helped them through their problems. I had all of the tools at my disposal for keeping my own marriage thriving.
But then my own child came.
The reality was nothing I had read about in books. I was unsure of myself and exhausted. I found a new and disturbing distance between my husband and myself as sleep deprivation and lack of intimacy took its toll. I wasn’t sure how to fit all the pieces of who I used to be back in to this new role of “Mom”.
Now I have over a decade of parenting under my belt with two children. (Adding another child was another big reality check.) I also have a private practice in Marriage and Family Therapy. As a mother, however, I am still and will always be a work in progress. I continue to strive to find that elusive “balance” as a mother, spouse, and professional therapist. I wanted to start these groups for all of us mothers to help each other become CALM – Centered And Loving Moms.
